Panama! 2 - Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical and Calypso Funk on the Isthmus 1967-77

Panama! 2 - Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical and Calypso Funk on the Isthmus 1967-77

I’ve always loved compilation albums going back to the heights of The Rock Machine Turns You On, Nice Enough To Eat and This Is Soul – albums that acted as calling cards for entire catalogues (CBS, Island and Atlantic respectively). In 2009, at their best, compilations introduce the listener to new or neglected artists, genres and cultures - at their worst they are no more than a random jumble of tracks that re-cycle over-worked catalogues knocking out budget-priced multi-CD packages - surely a route to mutually-assured destruction.

Soundway have the best kind of previous, which excellent and acclaimed releases such as Colombia!, Nigeria Special 1970-76 and Sir Victor Uwaifo’s Guitar-Boy Superstar amply illustrate. They specialize in putting together collections that focus on previously obscure genres, unjustly overlooked artists, rhythms and countries and they do their business with knowledge, passion and style.

The latest Soundway delicacy is Panama! 2 which gives it to you straight, laying down a marker with Papi Brandoa Y Su Conjunto Aires Tableños’s version of the Willie Colón anthem La Murga before moving full-speed ahead through Latin sounds, Cumbia Tropical and Calypso Funk on the Isthmus – with driving, rootsy, bumpy grooves all the way.

An isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas, apparently, and the Isthmus of Panama connects North and South America. – so besides learning about the music of Panama in the 60s and 70s I also got a little geography lesson. It’s also worth noting that the off-spring of the largely pan-Caribbean workforce drafted in to build the Panama Canal gave New York’s Fania Records the ideal focus group - so Panamanian DJs got to road-test all the label’s latest releases. And it’s this unique community and the array of influences they brought with them that Panama! 2 reflects so brilliantly.
